Australia - South Australia - Barossa - Peter Lehman

I've always enjoyed Peter Lehman wines at home, to me they were the perfect example of good medium priced Australian wine. The cellar door was a very comfortable place with some very nice artwork. The staff was friendly and tastings were available of all their wines. They serve a lunch platter that is highly recommended by other wineries.

2003 Southern Flinders Shiraz
Plum colored. Nice nose, dark spices such as black pepper and anise. Very big tannins, fruit taste is almost smothered in tars and dark black tea. Very big impact, concentrated flavors. A long finish that opens up a bit with plum skin tastes. The word taut comes to mind. AU$25

2002 Shiraz Muscadelle
Brilliant ruby color. A bit of licorice in the peppery nose. Again, big upfront flavor. The tannins in this are much softer and velvetier than in Southern Flinders. Strong black cherry flavors. Dark chocolate on the finish. AU$25

2002 Eden Valley Shiraz
More red raspberry colored, a bit cloudy. Big time eucalyptus on the nose, sweeter spices. Taste follows through on the menthyl. Fruit forward, good acid. AU$28

2003 Barossa "The Futures" Shiraz
Plum skin colored. Classic shiraz nose, ice spice, hints of dark mushrooms. Beautifully balanced, nice round flavors, layers of fruit. Very smooth tannins. Finishes with nice milk chocolate. This is my kind of Barossa Shiraz. I liked this one a lot for the price. AU$30

2004 "Stockwell Road" Shiraz
Hints of blue in the plum color. A fairly floral nose, spice is more towards cinnamon and cloves. Feels a bit thin in your mouth. A lighter styled wine, but still has a nice long finish. Easy drinking. Very gentle tannins. Hints of orange zest on the finish. Very nice, doesn't seem as "serious" as "The Futures" but still enjoyable. AU$30

2004 "Peppers" Maranago Cabernet
More violet end of red. Bell peppers on the nose. Very soft tannins. Milk chocolate flavors. Easy toasty oak on the finish. AU$30

2002 "Mentor" Cabernet / Merlot / Shiraz / Malbec Blend
Very dark colored. A very complex nose with mint, violets, spice, and cassis. Great complexity Cab is up front, but lots of chocolate and fruit, especially blueberries. Beautiful complex finish, very layered. Interesting & nicely made. Track this down at home. AU$40
